Socio-cognitive views of learning. To begin, view these two short videos:
These videos demonstrate the socio-cognitive aspect of learning. They particularly focus on small children, but the ideas are applicable to all learners.
Constructivist learning: Next, you will watch a video that shows and discusses aspects of constructivist learning from students’ and teachers’ perspectives. This activity should help you think about different factors (including socio-cognitive views of learning) that may impact students’ knowledge-construction. The video is located at:
Choose the video: Can we believe our eyes?
The full video is about 1 hour. You are to focus on the sections about making a lightbulb work. Start watching at 18:20 minutes into the video, watch through 28:40 minutes. Then, skip to 36:00 minutes and watch until the end. Your complete viewing time will be about 28 minutes.
Take notes about your observations. Once you have completed watching the videos, blog about the following questions:
  1. What are features of constructivist learning?
    • Using the case of how electricity works to light a light-bulb, describe at least 5 aspects of constructivist learning/teaching that are demonstrated in Can we believe our eyes?
  2. Based on what you learned from all the videos, what socio-cognitive and constructivist ideas might you need to consider when planning your own lessons within your own domain of knowledge?
